Chris has also included notes on several of his favourites to illustrate the depth of complexity and achievement!
James Bond – The World is not Enough (filmed in 1998)
Still undoubtedly the river’s biggest and most encompassing production to date. Involving a combination of major landmarks between the MI5 Building at Vauxhall and The O2 Dome (the Millennium Dome). Chris (as Marine Coordinator) and his team provided a range of services to ensure the various elements of the sequence could be seamlessly linked to set the scene of Piers Brosnan’s second outing as Bond. Boats were fired from the shore, jumped and sunk, crashed and blown up. Eight of the V8 powered jet boats were used as well as several Sunseeker’s in action and a small armada behind the scenes. The various shoots involved careful coordination of the multitude of crew, equipment and craft.
An exciting and rewarding production.
Daniel Deronda (filmed in 2002)
A period BBC Drama production based on George Elliot’s famous novel. The sequence involved ‘dressing’ a section of the Thames in Central London by St. Paul’s Cathedral and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, to replicate a Victorian scene with Thames Sailing Barges and small rowing Shallops and Skiffs. Ensuring all craft ( and personnel) were kept within period was challenging and needed a great deal of research and discipline.
The Flood (filmed in 2006)
A topical action film featuring Robert Carlyle and … where the Thames Barrier is overcome by a storm surge and London is washed away. The Thames Barrier was the focal point for the filming with some extreme helicopter coordination. A major logistical problem of delivering camera’s lighting, generators and prop’s to the top of the Thames Barrier’s gleaming piers was overcome utilising our crane barge the Tidy Thames I. Our pier by Tower Bridge (Butler’s Wharf Pier) was also heavily dressed and became a secondary shooting area. Ground to air helicopter coordination was a challenging but highly successful part of this shoot.
Harry Potter – The Philosopher’s Stone (filmed in 2006)
Harry and pals flew up the river Thames into Central London in this sequence which encompassed some ‘near miss’ action between camera boats and a variety of fixed and moving river objects! Four large high-speed RIB’s were mounted with steady cams on their bows to create the shots required to allow real life footage from Harry and his friends as they flew up the river. The logistical issue of following a fleet of high-speed RIB’s as they dived around bridge piers and carefully positioned boats meant a fleet of safety, support and coordination craft which all needed to be able to transport the crew and support equipment at speed. Overseen by Chris this production pushed the boundaries of what was possible on the river.
